POREMBA REACHING NEW HEIGHTS AT WIDE RECEIVER FOR PHILLIPSBURG

October 23, 2017

It’s not a reach to think that the touchdown Ray Poremba scored Friday night will be the first of many for the talented and improving-every-day Phillipsburg sophomore wide receiver.

It’s also no reach to say that it was a critical score in the 41-16 win over host Montgomery in Mid-State 37 Delaware Division play, Poremba’s TD, coming on a 17-yard pass from junior quarterback Jack Stagaard, erased a 9-7 lead Cougar lead and allowed the Stateliners (6-0, 5-0 division) to carry a 14-9 lead into halftime, Had Montgomery had the lead at the half and the warm feelings that come with it, who knows?

But there’s no doubt the touchdown came on a reach. Poremba, going down near the Cougar 2-yard line, went at full extension with his arms to lift the ball over the goal line and the officials quickly signaled for the score.

“I thought I was going to get in,” said Poremba, who caught 4 passes for 61 yards and the touchdown on the night. “I was trying to get away from my tackler, but I saw a couple of other (Montgomery) guys coming so I just reached out with the ball. That’s my first varsity touchdown.”

Not every coach likes to see such reaches with the ball, because it’s all too easy to lose control of it. But Phillipsburg head coach Frank Duffy approved of Poremba’s play.

“It was very good situational awareness on Ray’s part to realize where was on the field and score,” Duffy said.

It’s the kind of moment Stateliner fans have come to expect from the dependable sophomore. On the season Poremba has 16 catches for 221 yards.

“Ray has come a very long way,” Duffy said. “He is not a burner, but he has good strides and runs good patterns.”

Of course as a coach Duffy couldn’t quite avoid mentioning room for improvement.

“Ray did a drop a pass today,” Duffy said.

But it’s no reach to think Duffy can live with a drop or two as Ray Poremba reaches his potential as a wide receiver.
