Phillipsburg football opens season with rout of Warren Hills

Phillipsburg 54, Warren Hills 0 -- Rapid Recap

Phillipsburg High School’s football team answered some questions, while Warren Hills had little to no answers Friday night for the Stateliners.

P’burg dominated the Blue Streaks 54-0 in the Mid-State 38 season opener for both schools at Warren Hills Regional School District Stadium.

While both programs lost heavy numbers to graduation, it was the Stateliners, ranked No. 6 by lehighvalleylive, who seemed to reload as Warren Hills was left to regroup.

“Very happy with what we saw tonight,” Phillipsburg coach Frank Duffy said. “A lot of things to improve upon. We’ll look at the film tomorrow and get that stuff corrected, but right now we’re very happy. It’s a nice first win.”

Top Phillipsburg performer: 5-foot-11, 200-pound senior Bobby Coury scored P’burg’s first touchdown and was all over the field on defense, notching an interception that set up the Stateliners’ second TD, recovering a fumble in the second quarter, and finishing in double digits in tackles, including two sacks of Blue Streaks quarterback Kevin Farrell.

Matt Quetel led a running back-by-committee attack, rushing for 84 yards and a TD before Duffy emptied the bench.

Top Warren Hills performer: Jon Lainez was one bright spot for the young Blue Streaks, carrying the load at running back. The sophomore was seeing his first varsity action -- like most of the Blue Streaks.

Logan Wilkenson, a senior, blocked a second-quarter extra point and did a solid job returning kickoffs for Warren Hills.

What it means: The Stateliners youth got valuable varsity snaps, which will bode well as the schedule beefs up. Warren Hills will have to shake off this one and get ready for a game with Governor Livingston next Saturday.
