PHILLIPSBURG'S DANNY FISHER NEVER STOPS BATTLING ON FOOTBALL FIELD

Danny Fisher did what he could do to prevent Phillipsburg’s football loss Friday night.

Actually, the Stateliner senior did whatever he could wherever he could whenever he could.

That it wasn’t quite enough to stop Hillsborough from posting a 27-13 Mid-State 38 Delaware Division win on a drizzly, windy night in Somerset County was in no way due to any shortage of effort on Fisher’s part.

“Danny is the ultimate competitor,” Phillipsburg head coach Frank Duffy said.

Fisher was the major reason the Stateliners (2-2 overall and divison) were even in the game in the fourth quarter.

He completed 10 of 24 passes for 157 yards; the percentage isn’t perhaps ideal, but, as one longtime Stateliner type said, “When was the last time we threw 24 passes?” Fisher ran for a touchdown. He covered an onside kick. He played a tough game on defense from his linebacker spot.

If number 12 seemed everywhere for Phillipsburg, it’s because he was.

“I am very proud of his effort tonight,” Duffy said.

It was Fisher’s 40-yard pass to senior running back Ja’Quan Jones – who made a spectacular catch of Fisher’s lofted aerial – that set up Phillipsburg’s first score, senior kicker Brendan Grube’s 34-yard field goal right before halftime.

It was Fisher who led an 80-yard drive, with big completions to junior wide receiverJevon Boothman, Jones, and sophomore wide receiver Sterling Walker-Sutton, capped by Fisher’s 1-yard TD run, to make it 20-10 in the fourth quarter. And Fisher’s completions to senior tight end Zach Troxell and senior wide receiverGarrett DuPont set up Grube’s 24-yard field goal that gave P’burg a prayer late at 20-13.

Fisher also recovered his onside kick in the middle of all that.

Fisher, as he would be the first to tell you, wasn’t perfect, He threw an interception, needed to do a better job avoiding sacks, and missed seeing some open receivers. But, given that this was his first quarterback start of 2016, perhaps mistakes and errors could be excused, given what else he did.

“Our kids battled tonight to come back the way they did,” Duffy said.

And no one battled harder than Danny Fisher.
